Retirees in Pahrump are some of the busiest people around.
Not only do they volunteer for all sorts of worthy causes, some find time to be proactive in issues that affect their own well-being and that of others.
The Pahrump Military Retiree Council is such a group, with members working toward better benefits for all veterans and supporting specific changes to help retirees, reservists and active duty personnel.
The next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Feb. 11, at Wulfy's clubhouse in the RV park next to the pool. Two meetings were held in December, one of which was in Amargosa Valley. Chairing the council is Teddy Farson, retired Army command sergeant major.
Limiting the number of combat tours is one of the subjects up for discussion at the February meeting. In 2008, there were 177 suicides by veterans. The group will discuss and possibly recommend a limitation on the number of combat tours in a given period of time.
VA applications for disabilities will also be up for discussion. "There are 397,000 claims pending, and the backlog is over 12 months," said Tom Waters, vice chairman for the group and a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel.
